The production subtotal line

What the line in the summary panel is for, where it sits in a new quote and how to move it.

In production budgets the production fee is usually charged on the cost of the production itself, not on the whole budget. Post-production or photography then stay outside that base. The Production subtotal line tells the app where production costs end.

Where it sits

Categories above the line are production costs, categories below it are the rest. In a new quote, post-production, photography and other costs sit below the line, and in the Advanced set also director fees and VFX and animation.

The subtotal row shows up in the Cost summary panel once a markup is calculated as a percentage of production costs. Your client sees the same row in the same place in the document, so they can see what the production fee is charged on.

How to move it

  • Drag the ⠿ handle on the subtotal row onto another category.
  • Or reach the handle with the Tab key and use the up and down arrows.
  • Or reorder a category on the Cost items tab so it ends up on the other side of the line. The app warns you that the amount will change.

The line cannot sit below the last category, because it would not split anything. Without the line, the Production costs option disappears from a markup’s base field, and a markup set to production costs earlier is calculated on the whole budget.
